Good healthy hand hygiene has been around for a while, but not for as long as you may think.
It was the late 1840s – a Hungarian obstetrician by the name of Ignaz Semmelweis oversaw two maternity clinics in Vienna. One staffed by medical students and the other staffed by midwives. The mortality rate at the clinic staffed by the medical students was 10 per cent, and at the second staffed by midwives it was 4 per cent (more than half). Why was this? Semmelweis set out to discover that the midwives washed their hands, and the medical staff did not. He concluded that the medical trainees needed to wash their hands, like the midwives did. Fatality rates dropped and he presented his findings to the world. He was dismissed as a madman…
Only years after were his findings validated in Germany, and now we know that keeping our hands clean, washing and sanitising is one of the best things we can do to fight against disease, infection and viruses such as flue and covid 19.
